Establishing a Self-Sufficient (self-supporting) University Laboratory: Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract: In my current position, apart from my teaching and research duties, I am responsible for planning, budgeting, operation, upgrading, and maintenance of the facility and analytical instrumentation of the Northern Analytical Laboratory Services (NALS) as the central equipment facility of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). I also, liaising with local industries to conduct R&D projects for addressing their technical needs and questions and eventually generate revenue for UNBC. The NALS facility-which is now an ISO17025 accredited lab- is the only instrumental analysis laboratory that offers trace elemental analysis, industrial hygiene (air sampling and analysis) as well as environmental testing services in Northern BC.
In this presentation, I would like to share my experience in the journey toward commercializing a research laboratory (the NALS facility) at the UNBC. Furthermore, I will share some of MATTER’s lab recent works on environmental application of porous materials,
